Uganda: Crackdown On Immature Fishing Heats Up

The government has intensified operations to end illegal fishing on major fresh water lakes in western region where thousands of tonnes of immature fish and illegal fishing gear have been destroyed.

The number of people arrested and prosecuted on suspicion of taking part in the illegal activity has eclipsed 100 since the beginning of the year, the police said yesterday.

Uganda: New Fund to Improve Agriculture Financing

Small Medium Enterprises engaged in growing various types of crops in the country will soon benefit from an European Union initiative that has staked an equity fund to boost their agricultural productivity.

European Union is slated to contribute Euro 15 million towards the fund while the government of Uganda and financial sectors like banks are expected to make a contribution in order to come up with a total figure of between Euro 30 million and 40 million as the overall total for the initiative.

Uganda: Government Okays Nutrition Plan

The government yesterday approved the Nutrition Plan of Action to stamp out malnutrition in the country. At the closing of the regional meeting of Southern and Eastern African Parliamentary Committee on Health last week in Kampala, participants said the activities in the action plan will involve teaching people how to eat a balanced diet to promote a healthy living.

Dr Kisamba Mugerwa, the chairman of the National Planning Authority, said Ugandans are not aware of how they can eat a balanced diet. He said many people think imported foods are best meals for their bodies and end up ignoring indigenous foods.

Uganda: Ssekandi Starts Youth Farming Scheme

Vice-President Edward Ssekandi has started a youth development exchange scheme. The scheme is being conducted under a partnership with the Korea-based Canaan Farming school.

It involves giving youth skills in farming. At least 30 youth leaders from Bukoto East constituency in Masaka district completed a one-week course on modern farming and leadership skills under the scheme on September 12.

The scheme will roll out to other areas in the country. The selected model youth will receive five hi-breed pigs and over 10 hens for the poultry projects, according to the Vice-President’s deputy principle private secretary, Kityamuwesi Musubire.

Uganda: Dairy Farmers Use Sorghum As Alternative Feed

Even without Napier grass for their animals, dairy farmers in Gulu district say their farming is still sustainable whether in the dry or rainy season because they have been exposed to alternative feeds for their animals.

In a programme by the National Livestock Resource Research Institute (Nalirri) that Ms Margaret Odwar, a dairy farmer in Bardege Division, Gulu Municipality, has benefited from, she and others have been sensitised on using sorghum plant as animal feed. “I get double benefits from the sorghum plant because I use it for both subsistence purposes and use its stem for feeding my dairy cow,” said Ms Odwar, who is the chairperson of Gulu Women Diary Association.
