Rwanda: Koreans Sets Aside U.S.$5 Million for Rural Development

The South Korean government, through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has set aside $5 million to be used in the improvement of agricultural activities in Nyaruguru, one Rwanda’s most remote and poorest districts.

The deal was reached this March after the Nyaruguru district officials and representatives of KOICA agreed on the terms and conditions of the three year project. The funds will be used in the construction of contour terraces of about 400 hectares in Kibeho sector, supporting livestock cooperatives with at least 200 heifers, modern maize growing, milk production, among others.

“The project is timely and will boost the agriculture and land consolidation program of the district,” said the Mayor of Nyaruguru Francois Habitegeko. “We expect to increase on agricultural product, once this project is complete”

Angola: Portuguese Minister Suggests Creation of Cold-Storage Networks

Lubango — The Portuguese minister of Agriculture, Environment, Seas and Territory Development, Assunção Frestas, defended on Tuesday an urgent creation of cold-storage networks for the development of agriculture in Angola.

Speaking to ANGOP, in Lubango City, southern Huila Province, she said that the mentioned infrastructures are fundamental for the development of agriculture and cattle-breeding, as there would be no high risks of losing the production, as well as the products reach customers in good condition.

“Not only in Huila, but all over the world, 40 per cent of the products that are produced do not reach the customers, they either stay on the ground or are deteriorated between the ground and the final consumer”, she said.

No doubt, agriculture has been the major source of employment for thousands of Kwara indigenes in the past nine years.
