Ghana: Turning cassava peel into animal feed

Agri students from the Kwadaso Agricultural College in the Ashanti Region have set up a company to recycle waste cassava peels into animal feed. Could this be an alternative to maize as raw animal feed material?

The company, Kwadaco Company Limited, was formed by Mr Albert Adombile Ayingura, Mr Eric Agyei Gyansah and Mr Marcellinus Babai, all students of the college. The three have subsequently become the Managing Director (MD), Marketing Manager and Head of Operations respectively.

The establishment of the company falls under the agri-business course offered in Agricultural Training Colleges nationwide. The course is to help identify and nurture entrepreneurship among students by inculcating in them the need to establish their own businesses after school instead of waiting to be employed.

Kenya: Mumias Enters Soil Research Deal With KARI

Mumias Sugar has signed a soil fertility management programe with the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute (KARI) to address a cyclic cane shortage problem. Under the two year programe, KARI will research on soil conditions in the Mumias Sugar cane zones and advice on the suitable fertilizer.

Specifically, KARI will examine the physical and biological soil condition at Mumias growing scheme and then develop a cost effective fertilizer regime with a holistic crop nutrition strategy.

Mozambique proposes law to axe VAT on animal feed raw materials

A new law proposed by Mozambique’s government plans to make raw materials used for the production of animal feed to be exempt from VAT.

Mozambique’s Association of Poultry Farmers has welcomed the move. However the chairman, Emílio Tinga, told local newspaper Notícias that the association’s poultry farmers had expected much more, specifically for VAT exemption to be extended to the entire production process, including the import of equipment.

Uganda: Turning Banana Peels Into Poultry Feeds

Over 1,500 tonnes of garbage are generated in Kampala daily that Kampala City Council is overwhelmed by the waste output due to its lack of capacity to collect and dump it at its landfills.

Three quarters of garbage rots uncollected on pavements, streets, sewerage outlets and water channels.

A working with a banana peels mill. Banana peels bran is much cheaper than maize bran.

This unfortunate tragedy is witnessed especially in markets, blurring the city’s image and posing a serious health danger. However, thanks to an innovation of Kasubi Parish Local Community Development Initiative and Kawaala Recycling and Manufacturing Development Group who have started turning banana peels into veterinary feeds.

De Heus acquires feed plant in South Africa

De Heus is pleased to announce the acquisition of feed producer Horizon Voere in Klerksdorp, North West Province, South Africa.

Horizon Voere, involved in the poultry, pig and ruminant fed sectors, produces approx. 40,000 mt of feed per year.

According to De Heus, this acquisition is a part of its expansion strategy the company is currently realising in the South African market, with further plans in the pipeline.
