Kenya: Coconut regulators to issue licences for sector products
The Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA) will now issue licences to regulate and turn around the sector into a commercial venture, the authority’s managing director, Mr Jonathan Sulubu, said.
Palm wine will in future be sold by licensed dealers only.
Although the wine has over the years been embroiled in legal, religious and social image questions, it is the product that is currently driving growth in the industry and likely to remain so as sign indicates that this is where the returns are, a recent research by Gachanja Githende, a managing partner of Institutional Development and Management Services (IDM) revealed.
The authority will in June issue a total of six different licences on production, sale and distribution of various coconut products.
